Trump - a unifier and a peacemaker?
The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States marked the beginning of a second term that promises to be as divisive and impactful as his first. While some view these events as bold steps toward addressing pressing issues, others see them as a continuation of Trump’s polarizing and confrontational approach to governance. In his inaugural address, Trump declared, "The golden age of America begins right now," positioning himself as a unifier and a peacemaker. However, this rhetoric rings hollow given his immediate actions, which seem more focused on consolidating power and catering to his base than fostering unity. The contradiction between his words and his deeds cannot be ignored and raises questions about the sincerity of his message.
Trump wasted no time in issuing a cascade of executive actions that spanned immigration, government reform, and climate policy, among other areas. Many of these orders reflect a return to hardline stances from his first term, with significant implications for marginalized communities and international relationships. His reinstatement of the border wall initiative ignores the complex realities of immigration and perpetuates a simplistic, fear-driven narrative. The order to end birthright citizenship is not only unconstitutional but also a blatant attack on immigrant communities, further fueling division and xenophobia. His promise to launch the largest deportation program in U.S. history is both logistically daunting and morally troubling.
On climate and energy policy, Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement undermines global efforts to combat climate change and isolates the U.S. from its allies. By prioritizing fossil fuels over sustainable energy with his “Drill, Baby, Drill” approach, Trump’s policies risk long-term environmental damage for short-term economic gains. The creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is presented as a cost-cutting initiative, but questions remain about the true goals of such reforms and their potential impact on transparency and accountability.
One of the most striking elements of Trump’s day-one actions was the optics surrounding his signing of executive orders. Conducted on stage in a stadium, this highly choreographed spectacle blended reality television theatrics with populist messaging. By transforming what is traditionally a subdued, administrative act into a grandiose performance, Trump sought to underscore his power and reinforce his image as a decisive leader. However, such overt staging raises concerns about the erosion of institutional decorum and the potential for governance to devolve into performative spectacle. The framing of these actions as dramatic victories, rather than complex policy measures requiring thoughtful deliberation, risks oversimplifying governance and deepening the public’s mistrust of political institutions.
One of the most troubling actions on Trump’s first day was his decision to pardon nearly 1,600 individuals connected to the Capitol riots of January 6, 2021. This move undermines the rule of law and sends a dangerous message that political violence may be excused if it aligns with Trump’s agenda. The commutation of sentences for members of far-right groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers is particularly alarming. It emboldens extremism and deepens the fractures in American society. Accountability is essential for healing, and these pardons do the opposite.
Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump and newly appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency, sparked outrage with a gesture made at a post-inauguration event. While Musk claims the motion was meant to express empathy (“my heart goes out to you”), the visual resemblance to a Nazi salute cannot be ignored. As a public figure, Musk’s actions carry immense weight. Whether intentional or not, this gesture’s resemblance to offensive historical symbols highlights the need for greater care and sensitivity. Intent alone is insufficient when the visual impact causes such widespread harm. Musk’s dismissive response on X, where he called the criticism “a tired attack,” exacerbates the situation, polarizing public opinion further. However, some have defended Musk, including the Anti-Defamation League, an organization founded to combat anti-Semitism. “It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute,” the group posted on X. This defence underscores the controversy’s complexity, despite Musk's intent it does little to mitigate the harm caused by Musk’s actions in garnering adulation from the far right. According to a report by Wired, neo-Nazi communities praised Musk's actions, interpreting his salute as a supportive signal.
Trump’s sweeping executive orders are certain to face significant legal challenges. Many of these policies, such as ending birthright citizenship, are likely to be struck down in court, highlighting their impractical and divisive nature. His unilateral approach, including the withdrawal from the WHO and the Paris Agreement, has already strained international relationships. These actions signal a retreat from global leadership, leaving the U.S. increasingly isolated. The combination of controversial pardons, Musk’s gesture, and hardline policies paints a troubling picture of an administration focused on division rather than unity. While this may energize Trump’s base, it risks alienating moderates and further entrenching societal divides.
Donald Trump’s second inauguration and the actions taken on his first day in office reveal a presidency that prioritizes confrontation over collaboration. Far from ushering in a "golden age," these events have deepened divisions and raised serious questions about the direction of the United States under his leadership. These actions demand critical scrutiny. Trump’s vision of America may resonate with his supporters, but for many, it represents a step backward at a time when unity and progress are desperately needed.
